One of the two portraits was taken by the author from the usual photographer's standpoint. The mere presence of the "other" altered the way the model behaved and appeared in front of the camera. In the second portrait, the models saw their reflection in the mirror placed behind the camera, allowing them to see themselves and pose accordingly.
Just as light is refracted while passing through a prism, the human perception of one's appearance is refracted by its reflection.
